  • Galleries and Gardens Tour

    Day Trip

Louisiana's Other Side has a generous helping of natural beauty. For a look into the area's colorful splendor and artistic accomplishments, visitors can take this Galleries and Gardens Tour during the spring or fall, for the best shot at experiencing luscious flora.

This tour also includes a stop at The Southern University Museum of Art, which is a grand collection of more than 2,000 pieces of African and African-American art. Tower Gallery also has many local artists' works on display and handmade jewelry and crafts for sale. At East Bank Gallery, peruse rotating exhibits by local artists or visit the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College, which offers a mix of revolving and permanent exhibits.

R.W. Norton Art Gallery sits in a 40-acre landscaped park, and houses the Southwest's largest permanent collection of American Western paintings by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. The gallery also comes to life every spring with one of the largest azalea gardens in the South.

Indulge in the beauty of tropical, seasonal and native plants at The Barnwell Garden & Art Center, and make sure you stop by the Fragrance Garden, designed for the visually impaired. Then get lost in a world of exotic art when you visit the gallery's exhibits of nationally known artists and local talent. The center overlooks the Red River and RiverView Park in downtown Shreveport.

Be sure to check out the Once in a Millennium Moon mural, the nation's largest public arts mural – a unique time capsule capturing the people of Louisiana's Other Side.

Top off your garden tour with a stroll through the American Rose Center, the nation's largest rose garden and home to more than 20,000 roses in 60 individual gardens. The Christmas season is spectacular, as the gardens are illuminated by millions of lights and holiday displays. Stop by the gift shop full of hundreds of items of interest to the rose connoisseur and take something special home.
